It’s 5 pm and someone asks what’s for dinner. You decide. Again.
Here’s the short answer: once a week, label each night by how much time you’ll have, plan four or five dinners to match, and write the grocery list from that plan. About 20 minutes.
It’s the dinner part of planning the family’s week once, on Sunday.
The Real-Life Version
The 20-minute meal planning method
- Look at the week. Note every late pickup, practice and night out from the family calendar.

- Label each night full, short or zero:
Three kinds of night
- 45+ min
Full night
Cook a real recipe, and make enough for another night.
- 20 min
Short night
A dinner you can make without a recipe: tacos, pasta, eggs and toast.
- 0–5 min
Zero night
Leftovers, something from the freezer, sandwiches or takeout.

- Plan four or five dinners to fit. Zero nights count as planned.

- Write the grocery list from the plan, after a look in the fridge. Thursday’s fridge check is a good moment. The free weekly dinner planner has the three kinds of night and the list on one page.

When Life Happens
When the week changes
Swap, don’t scrap. Move a missed dinner to the next night with time.
Hard week? Every night can be a zero night. Written down, it’s still a plan, and it leaves less to clean after dinner.

Your Next Small Win
Label the next five nights full, short or zero. Just the labels.
